Ulllttrraaaa Combooooo

Mortal Kombat was an unstoppable force in the 90's. Its meteoric rise to the top of arcades knocked Street Fighter 2 down and it owned the 90's fighter scene. It gave us 2 movies, one being the best video game movie ever (still for some reason) and one being the largest garbage dump fire since...well, the Street Fighter movie.

In 1994 a new competitor came on the arcade scene and threatened to take away Mortal Kombat's title. Killer Instinct was developed by a company that would become synonymous with the 64 bit era of gaming; Rare. Nintendo teamed with Midway to release Killer Instinct in arcades and was partially a low key advertisement for Nintendo's upcoming Ultra 64 console. The game focused on a combo system that was both rewarding for people willing to learn the ins and outs of the controls and for newcomers who could button mash their way to victory. It was like playing against someone that was Eddy Gordo in Tekken 3.

The combo system and the announcer that would scream out the combos you landed were a huge selling point to the game. The cast of characters were also great even though you could tell Mortal Kombat was a basis for some of them. Except Chief Thunder, Mortal Kombat totally got the idea of Nightwolf from him. There was nothing better than hearing the announcer scream ULLLTRAAA COMMMBOOOO!!!

Killier Instinct would not reach the heights of Mortal Kombat, but it did have a huge affect on fighting games when it came to combo systems. Mortal Kombat 3 felt pressure from Killer Instinct and that is why it had the combos in it.

Now Mortal Kombat is getting a new movie next year and will be an R-rated version complete with fatailities. Let's take a look and see who would play our favorite characters from Killer Instinct to take on the Ultratech corporation. Let us know who you want to see as Jago, Orchid, TJ Combo, Glacius and all of the roster.
