Angel Has Fallen Rises To #1- Weekend Box Office August 23-25, 2019

Gerard Butler fails to fall.

Gerard Butler is doing his best to make sure the adventures of secret service agent Mike Banning continue. Angel Has Fallen brought in $21 million to open along the same track as 2016's London Has Fallen. The Fallen series is made on the cheap (for Hollywood) and brings in big returns worldwide. London Has Fallen had a budget of $60 million in 2016 and went on to make over $200 million worlwide. Angel Has Fallen was made for even less and should keep Mike Banning employed taking care of Morgan Freeman for a fourth movie.

Good Boys had a less than usual drop in its second weekend taking in $11.7 million. The film now has grossed $42 million on a $20 million budget. Faith-based film Overcomer continued the string of hits for Christian movies coming in third with $8.2 million. Say what you will, but the church turns out to support movies funded by them.

Hobbs & Shaw made $8.1 million, but the big news was the films $102 million take in China pushing its worldwide total to $588.9 million. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark took another $6 million to cross the $50 million mark and The Lion King crossed $1.5 billion worlwide to make it the ninth highest grossing film ever.

Ready or Not, the insane looking dark comedy opened with $7.5 million. The film was a hit with critics and fans with an 87% and 82% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes. It could turn into a cult favorite when it is released at home.

It may seem like an anemic few weeks at the box office, but it is the calm before the storm known as It: Chapter 2 on September 6th.
