He is influenced by the character of the same name from Call of the Wild and White Fang. He becomes part of the Thornberry family when Eliza and Darwin found him and his adventurous outgoing nature serves as a foil to Darwin's cautious nature. The relationship between Darwin and Buck would be similar to Donkey and Puss in Boots' relationship where Buck would is the Puss in Boots to Darwin's Donkey.
