In 1916, revolutionary General Pancho Villa attacks the border town of Columbus, New Mexico, angering the U.S. government, which sends a military expedition to capture him. Villa takes refuge in the mountains of Chihuahua, where he faces his internal and external enemies, while trying to keep his ideal of social justice alive. The film chronicles Villa's epic persecution by the US military, as well as his personal, political, and military conflicts.
