David Kane and his father Jesse were infamous in the seas as pirates along with their crack team, stealing anything of value to help themselves. But one day, they met a young Arthur Curry, before he would don his famed orange and green costume as Aquaman. When Arthur refused to save Jesse, David watched his father sacrifice himself, leading David burning with a nihilistic approach to life and a burning hatred for Aquaman, leading him to use the technology he and his father absconded to become Black Manta, a terrorist of dangerous notoriety on the seas, and bitter enemy to Aquaman.
