The story begins with a character named Paolo Albertini, an orphan who, at such a young age, immigrated with his aunt, uncle and his cousin Thomas to New York in search of a better life. Arriving in New York, the family lives in the poorest conditions in little Italy. Aunt was a housewife and uncle worked in the port and earned pennies on which it was almost impossible to live.
