Two unemployed wanderers, George Milton (full name: George John Anderson Milton (John being George's only middle name; Anderson being George's mother's maiden surname)), and his companion, Lennie (a big, mentally-disabled man) find work on a ranch in Soledad during the great Depression in America. Both hope to one day be able to own their own land. However, with Lennie's child-like nature, George's responsibility to keep Lennie out of trouble, and the prejudices reigning in the area, will the two be able to fulfil their dream?
