  • misterwolf Plot: Throughout Indonesia and the entire world, seismic activity becomes increasingly loud at times within the Krakatoa Islands. Devout animist Ahmad Kusuma is beholden to the volcano, simply called Krakatoa, that centers the islands, seeing it as a god that will provide humanity their freedom.

  • misterwolf World-renowned biologist and adventurer Gracie Boswell is approached by two US soldiers, who ask her to investigate why the islands in Indonesia are so active; although sympathetic, she refuses, not wanting to end up in the same fate as her older brother Calvin, who was among the casualties within the 1879 Mount Etna eruption. However, she is convinced by her sister Rebecca to accept the task. Boswell approaches president Chester A. Arthur about her designated time until she may return to America. He gives her twenty-four hours total to uncover the islands' activity. Arriving internationally to Indonesia on a boat captained by her long-time friend William Eversoll and accompanied by Dutch geologist Rogier Verbeek, her mentor Amadin Omunuwa, and Rebecca herself, Boswell meets Kusuma, who gives her a tour of the islands. As time goes by, Boswell frequently takes notes of the volcano itself, speculating that it was the main cause of the occasionally loud noises.
  • misterwolf Krakatoa begins to erupt, and Boswell uses her instincts to avoid its incoming meteors, while Kusuma starts to become delusional towards her and the others. As the volcano's eruption gets more and more violent throughout the hours, Boswell comes to the realization that Krakatoa itself is responsible for the extremely loud activity and decides to record the sound as evidence. Kusuma tries to prevent her and the others from leaving, but Omunuwa knocks him unconscious and has him restrained. As the hours go by, they struggle to escape with the remaining ships due to the increasingly violent eruption, while the islands start to be filled with casualties.
  • misterwolf Kusuma escapes captivity and attacks the group, taking them hostage and diverting the ship back towards the volcano. He finally reveals his religious beliefs to the entire group and tells them about his views of Krakatoa as a god. Boswell eventually breaks free and unbinds her companions before chasing Kusuma around the volcano.
  • misterwolf Reaching the crater, Kusuma tries to convince Boswell that all humans are destined to find their freedom by worshipping Krakatoa; she replies that he is delusional, and a fierce fist fight erupts, with Kusuma eventually overpowering and injuring Boswell, and the eruption gets even more violent when the fight reaches a stalemate. Omunuwa, who was following close behind, ambushes Kusuma and restrains him long enough for Boswell to escape just moments before the crater explodes, killing both Omunuwa and Kusuma. Boswell reunites with her sister and Verbeek and the three escape back to their ship where Eversoll is waiting, and they start sailing away from Krakatoa at full speed. Arriving just in time to be taken back to America, the group witnesses Krakatoa erupting into a massive nuclear-like explosion, and they narrowly outrun it before finally reaching America.
  • misterwolf A few weeks later, the world is a changed place and is recovering from numerous tsunami waves, while president Arthur congratulates Boswell on her efforts and her willingness to honor her brother's legacy. Verbeek then tells Boswell that he plans to write about her and intends to publish a journal about the volcano, and then he returns to the Netherlands. Before the end credits roll, Boswell is shown in 1886, three years after Krakatoa's destruction, investigating the aftermath of the Mount Tarawera eruption in New Zealand.

  • misterwolf No guys, she didn't record audio footage. She just recorded it on paper. They didn't have electricity back then. If you see any videos saying "1883 eruption audio footage", don't fall for that like I did once. The Internet lies. The videos are probably just recordings of Krakatoa as it would be today, this time called by some as Anak Krakatau, referred to in English as The Son of Krakatoa. So yeah, don't trust that crap. You should know better.
