Insurance investigator Dave Brandstetter arises from the depression following the death of his lover to look into a death claim. In the small town of Pima, California, the car of radio personality and aspiring politician Fox Olson in small-town Pima, California was found in a river after a storm. But Olson's body is nowhere to be found. His widow is adamant he is dead, but Brandstetter finds that the facts don't add up. Through twist and turns of Olson's life, everyone is a suspect with a motive. Accusations against an innocent man lead Brandstetter to the seediest places that Pima tries to uncover its dirtiest secrets. And someone is desperate to keep those secrets buried.
