The events are set shortly after the events in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and after Dorothy Gale's departure back to Kansas. Zeb, Dorothy's distant cousin, from California, comes to his vacations in The Gale Farm. They are soon swallowed up by an earthquake, along with Zeb's cat Eureka and Bilina, Dorothy's chicken. They return to the Land of Oz to find it has been conquered and destroyed by the evil Nome King. Now, they must help a little boy, Tip, escapes from his evil guardian, the witch Mombi, with the help of a walking wooden figure with a jack-o'-lantern head named Jack Pumpkinhead (brought to life with the magic Powder of Life Tip stole from Mombi), as well as a living Sawhorse (created from the same powder); restore Oz and find the missing princess of Oz.
