Set in the 1940s, The Kryptonian is a period piece that reimagines the origins of Superman as an African American hero, focusing on themes of resilience, identity, and justice. Kal-El (known on Earth as Calvin Ellis) grows up in segregated Harlem, discovering his superhuman abilities amidst the harsh realities of racial discrimination and economic hardship. As he rises to use his powers for good, he grapples with the limitations imposed upon him by a society that fears what it does not understand. At the same time, a new threat emerges in the form of Parasite, a monstrous, power-hungry villain who represents societal greed and the oppression of marginalized communities. Using his ability to drain energy and thrive off others' struggles, Parasite becomes the living embodiment of exploitation, tearing through communities and feeding off fear and despair. With each encounter, Parasite grows stronger, pushing Calvin to confront not only a deadly enemy but also the pervasive injustices plaguing the world around him. Calvin’s journey is further complicated by those in power who want to control him or silence his message. Despite the odds, he learns to embody a symbol of hope, striving to empower others to stand up for themselves, even as the cost of being Superman isolates him.
