He is a kind, plucky and sometimes insecure 12 year old kid. Joel is slightly childish but still likable throughout the movie. He is the closest to Minya out of all the kids in the group and matures throughout the film. He views Titans as cool creatures and is into pop-culture. He is named after the child actor who played Joe Lamb in Super 8 and Veronica Taylor the voice actress for Ash Ketchum. He is inspired by male kid protagonists from anime shows (particularly Ash from Pokemon, Tai from Digimon, Nate from Yokai Watch, and similar shows) and kid adventure films (like Hogarth from Iron Giant and Elliott from E.T.).

    The group of kids in this movie, I imagine them to be a group of preteen (11-13 year old) kids you know like modernized Goonies. They would not be portrayed like those archetypes in movies but be realistic to kids in real life. Now each kid has their own views on the Titans and backgrounds. The group consists of three boys and two girls.
