One of the last Green Martians from Mars, J'onn J'onzz was pulled to Earth by an experiment done by Professor Saul Erdel, who helped J'onn to accustom himself to Earth. Over time, J'onn would take on many forms, even that of the Bronze Wraith from the Justice Experience, but retired from his first attempt at being a superhero when his friends died at the hands of Dr. Trap. It took the debut of Superman to help J'onn come forth as himself, being known as the Martian Manhunter, protecting Earth so it won't suffer Mars's fate.
