If this is true, then this is an even more of a colossal mistake than casting Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Hawkgirl is supposed to be an intimidating, rugged, no nonsense fearless warrior. This little girl is nothing like it. Michelle Rodriguez is/was/will be the perfect choice to play this role. It's an insult to the character to even consider a 5 ft nothing, 100 pounds when wet little girl who looks like she dropped out of a disney princess movie. I don't know if James Gunn is hand picking these people or if he's got some sort of a casting advisor, but if it's the latter, that someone needs to get fired ASAP.
