SCOTTISH: From the name of place in the Ayrshire district of Scotland. It possibly comes from Gaelic cuinneag meaning "milk pail". IRISH: From Irish Ó Cuinneagáin meaning "descendant of Cuinneagán", a diminutive of Conn. "Conn" is possibly from Old Irish conn meaning "sense, reason" or cenn meaning "head, chief".
