Derived from the Greek adjective εὐρύς (eurys) meaning "wide, broad" combined with the Greek noun λόχος (lochos) meaning "ambush", a word that later came to signify a tactical sub unit of the ancient Greek army. The word is ultimately derived from the Greek verb λοχάω (lochao) meaning "to lie in wait for, to waylay" as well as "to snare".
