Character Description
An exiled French aristocrat by birth. Unable to endure the harsh cruelty and injustices of France’s social class structure, he renounces the sins of his troubled family, the Evrémondes and seeks refuge in England, where he becomes a successful French tutor and falls in love with Lucie Manette. While he tries to stay honest and virtuous to his family, he cannot avoid being seen as a traitor wherever he is. He was initially charged with treason against the British Crown and nearly put his life on the line when he returned to Paris to help his old servant, Gabelle.
